Don't be bored on your
next trip - play these fun travel games!

Where Are We Going? -- Write the name of the place that you are going on a piece of paper (i.e.
Grandma's, Lucky Lake, Canyon Ranch, Mexico, etc.). Try to make as many words
from that word as you can. The winner picks the next word.
Let your children
have a map
Give your kids an opportunity to have their own copy of a map
of where you are going. Show them how far you have come, how much further
there is to go and let them mark it with a crayon. Every time they ask "How
much further?” have them take out their map and see for themselves. You might
also like to get a compass and show them how it works along with the map. You
can buy
maps, travel maps and travel guides or for more fun, you
can also print driving directions with a map when you click "get directions"

Twenty Questions
Have one
person think of a person, place, or object and keep it a secret. Have others
take turns asking yes/no questions (up to 20) until someone is able to guess
what the secret person, place or object is.
I Am Going On A Trip --
Following the letters of the alphabet, have one person start with A and say
for instance, "My name is Annie and I am going on a trip to Alabama. In my
suitcase I have an alligator." The next person would begin by saying, "My name
is Bob and I am going on a trip to Boston. In my suitcase I have a bug and a
baseball." On to the letter C. Keep adding to the number of items in that
suitcase. This can get really silly, and it really helps to develop memory!
If
I Were
-- If I Were an ..., I Would Be a .... Because ...'. This is a game that can
really stretch creativity. One person picks a subject. If, for example, you
began with the subject animal, the first person would begin by saying,"
If I were an ... animal, I would be a ... cow, because ...I would like to
enjoy long sunny afternoons in green pastures." Others follow with their
answer to what type of animal they would be. Another person picks a subject
(i.e., cars) and would begin by saying, "'If I were a ...car, I would be ...an
older Model A car, because ... my family would take me out only on special
occasions." Try subjects like food, birds, famous persons, etc.
Opposites
-- Mom and Dad give a word
and the kids give the opposite. Simple, but it can really make you think! I.e.
hot/cold, dry/wet, laugh/cry. You may work your way into some pretty
tough words!
Color Match
Choose a color and watch out the window for objects of that particular
color. Let's say you pick the color orange. Whenever you see an orange
object, you say:, "I see an orange (object)!". Try to list ten objects
before choosing a new color.
If two or more kids are in the car, you can compete to see who gets ten
objects first, or you can cooperate to get ten objects together, with an
adult keeping score.
Red Car/Yellow Car
Choose a color and watch for a car of that color. Whoever spots the right
color car first calls out, "(Color) Car!" and then gets to choose a different
color for the next car.
Alphabet
Hunt
^ UP
Using the alphabet, starting with A, watch out the window for road signs,
billboards, store signs, etc. with the called out letter. Once you find an "A"
move on to "B" and so on until you complete the alphabet. Then repeat!
Number
Hunt
Similar to above but use numbers. Watch out the window for numbers from
1-9, in order.
CrazyCreatures
Create strange-looking people, beasts or any combination of both by folding a
piece of paper into three equal sections. One person draws the face in the top
section, then folds down the paper so the next person can't see it. That
person then draws the midsection of the body, folds down the paper, and passes
it to the third person, who sketches the legs in the bottom section. Finally,
unfold the paper and name your creature.
Scavenger Hunt
^ UP
This is a good game for long drives. Give child/children lists of things
to watch for during the trip. Children can cooperate or compete to see who can
find all the items on the lists.
The lists can be made up ahead of time or during transit, and adjusted for
the type of environment and the age of the children.

Cow
Count
Watch out the window for a field of cows. First person to spot the field
of cows and call out the number of cows in the field, gets to keep the cows.
[Guess the number of cows if you can't count them all]. Keep track of each
persons cow count. For a twist, first person to see a cemetery announces "cow
loss" and chooses a person to eliminate their cows. That person goes back down
to zero. First person to see a church doubles their cows. [Cows got married].
First person to 500 cows wins!
License Plate Game
See how many different license plates you can find. Keep track of what
states, provinces or countries you see plates from. The person who finds the
most plates wins!
Animal Naming Game
You have to name an animal in alphabetical order. If a letter sounds like
one, but really isn't, you do the real letter. For letters like q,x,y, you
don't have to do, but you get an extra turn if you do.
Practice a Foreign Language
The car is a great place to practice
speaking a new language, especially since you have a captive audience and lots
of stuff to look at for learning vocabulary. Try this -- For the next 10
minutes have everyone only speak Spanish (or French, or whatever)! Point out
things you see in Spanish, say please and thank you. And if you don't know any
Spanish, you may not speak (this will inspire your kids to learn some, or give
you your very own version of the Quiet Game!)
Word Association
This game
is really simple and lots of fun. Pick someone to say any word, the
person next to them should say the first thing that comes to mind. Go
around from person to person, saying the first thing that pops into your
head and see where things go. It's really funny to hear some of the
stuff your family will come up with. The only time you need to stop and
start over is when someone takes to long to say something or you are all
laughing so hard that no one can talk!
This game
is great for quick-thinking practice and it encourages confidence and
creativity.
I Love Songs
Songs
are a great way to make time fly by. Try singing songs in rounds or
learning the words to a favorite song of yours, then make up your own
funny lyrics. Enjoy making up rhymes and poems. Be sure to have somebody
write down anything you come up with so you can read it again later.
More than anything else, be creative and have fun!
I Spy
This game
needs at least two people, but can have as many as you want. Choose
someone to go first (let's make it you again) and say, "I spy with my
little eye something that is '______'" (fill in the blank with a
one-word description of something you see. Be sure not to let anyone
know what it is though!! Have the other(s) ask "Is it this?", or "Is it
that?" until they guess what you were looking at. Each time you want to
give another hint say, "I spy with my little eye something that is
'(insert different clue here).'" The person who guesses first becomes
"It" for the next run.
This game
encourages all players to be observant and aware of surroundings as well
as help little ones learn how to ask pertinent questions.
Animal
Mineral Vegetable
This is a
great game for two people to a whole car-full. First select a
player. The player must think of a thing and only let others know
if it is an animal, mineral or vegetable. Have everyone take turns
asking "yes" or "no" questions to figure out what it is. Questions like
"Is it bigger than a bread box? Does it make noises?" or "Does it
smell?" are good ones to start with. Whoever figures out what the
Player's animal, mineral or vegetable is first wins and gets to be the
Player for the next round.
